I've seen the freeHIVtest.net ads on bus benches and bill boards all through out Broward County, wrote the web site down and figured I would look into checking it out.
I was driving east on Oakland Park Blvd between I 95 and US 1 a week ago and saw they had a large van with their logo on it offering free HIV tests. I drove by again today and the van was there today too. I figured what the hell, I donated blood 6 months or so ago and if your blood had anything wrong with it, surely the blood people would let you know.
They had lawn type chairs out under the awning of their van, with a table and what appeared to be clip boards with questionnaires. The test was free, I had free time, I wanted to take it, but I didn't want to sit in a lawn chair in a super market parking lot 10 feet off of Oakland Park Blvd with every one and their mother watching you fill out the questionnaire.
I asked the attendant, is it possible for me to fill this out INSIDE of your van? I guess I am not the only one who made this request. They had more seats inside the air conditioned van. I give my driver license as requested and fill out the form. The attendant puts on latex gloves, opens a hermetically sealed package and pricks your middle finger with a tiny pinch, squeezes out a droplet of blood and swabs it onto what looks like a Q tip. He inserts that into the small test kit that looks half the size of a nail polish bottle and then he asks you a dozen or so questions.
He lets you know that with in the few minutes it takes to ask the questions, the test will let you know if you have the presence of HIV antibodies in your blood.
The questions are like, how many sexual partners have you had in the past year. (I didn't want to sound like a dog and tell the truth. I pondered and said, about 6. If I told the truth it would have been like between 100 and 150 . I imagine some escorts would have to say like 1,000 to 1,500
)
Another question is, have you had sex with any needle drug users?
I forget the other questions, but they were along these lines.
I have a signed statement on their letter head verifying my test results of HIV negative on this date of 3/15/11.
The whole process was painless. The whole process was free. It is paid for and sponsored by The Aids Healthcare Foundation.
